I've written so many practical programs in JS or what have you, where I'm operating on what's conceptually a table but expressing it as a sequence of dictionaries with a uniform structure. Think of how many times you've done this, how many APIs work like this! If you want to manipulate them, it's normally a column-wise operation based on a subset of fields. Maybe you want to reorder them but you obviously don't want to only reorder the prices in a list of sales orders, you want to reorder all the columns in the same way at the same time!
